They feel overwhelmed. No one is awake anymore with whom you could talk. So open an app. “How are you?” asks the chatbot. They hesitate for a moment—and start typing.

What sounds like the future has long been a reality for many people. AI-powered advisory tools are booming. Chatbots such as Wysa, Woebot, and Kintsugi promise round-the-clock mental health support—with a friendly tone, automated follow-up questions, and algorithm-based conversation guidance. But how helpful are these tools, really? And when do we need more than just digital companions?

1. Technology on the Rise: What AI Can Do (Even Today)

Artificial intelligence has long since found its way into the field of mental health care. In digital coaching sessions, chatbots, and therapy apps, it performs tasks that used to be the exclusive domain of humans: listening, analyzing, and providing feedback. In countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, AI-powered tools like Wysa, Woebot, and Kintsugi are already part of primary health care. Wysa, in particular, has seen widespread adoption: The app is currently used by over 6 million people worldwide, in a total of 95 countries. According to the platform’s own figures, as many as 11 million people already have access to it through corporate and insurance contracts.

The advantages of such tools lie in their constant availability, the low barrier to entry, and the fact that they are scalable and therefore cost-effective. People who lie awake at night, feel lonely, or don’t (yet) feel comfortable talking to someone about their worries are the ones who turn to these digital companions. They are often used in areas such as stress management, sleep regulation, self-reflection, or psychoeducation (teaching about the causes, symptoms, progression, and treatment of mental illnesses). For many, they are a first step—a digital anchor in turbulent times.

2. However: The Limits of AI in Psychological Counseling

Despite all the progress that has been made, one thing remains clear: The potential of AI in sensitive counseling situations is limited. An AI may be able to formulate friendly sentences, but true empathy remains an illusion. After all, compassion (the most important prerequisite for relief and healing) does not arise from algorithms at all, but only through interpersonal contact. On top of that, AI doesn’t understand the context. It cannot grasp the life experiences behind a sentence or how a particular word affects a person. The issue of data protection is also a sensitive one: Health data is among the most sensitive information there is—and it is not always clear where it is stored, who has access to it, or who takes responsibility in the event of an emergency. The situation becomes particularly critical when AI-powered counseling reaches limits it fails to recognize—for example, when an acute crisis arises and no human intervention takes place. In such cases, the illusion of safety becomes a real danger.

3. Why Real People Remain Irreplaceable

Anyone who turns to another person for help with psychological or emotional distress is looking for more than just structured answers—they are looking for empathy. That feeling of being truly seen and understood can only arise in a human interaction. It is characterized by relationships, trust, and mutual care. Professional counselors can listen, ask questions, pause, and reflect emotions. They can tell when words are missing or when there is something significant implied between the lines. And they take responsibility—both for the conversation itself and for providing ongoing support. Especially during crises, when facing profound life questions, or in moments of existential crisis, we need someone who doesn’t just react, but walks alongside us. Change does not come about solely through information, but through relationships. And despite all technological advances, it remains profoundly human. No AI in the world forms a relationship with us. Only humans can do that.

4. Conclusion: Our Approach at awo lifebalance

Here at awo lifebalance, we closely monitor technological developments—and welcome innovations that can make people’s lives easier. At the same time, we are convinced that AI can assist, but not replace.

That is why our life situation coaches—experienced psychologists, therapists, and coaches—work with a personal, empathetic, and professional approach. They provide confidential counseling for stressful situations at work or in your personal life, mental health challenges, life crises, or health-related issues—in person, by phone, or online. And: You see the people, not just the data.

AI can do a lot. But not everything.

It’s a good start. But it is no substitute for a sympathetic ear, keen insight, and wise guidance from someone who listens and walks alongside you.

Potential or Problem?
